Dutch 30% ruling and Taxes in the Netherlands for Expats

How much tax and what kind of tax do you need to pay when you come to live in the Netherlands?

Income

You pay income tax for the salary you receive, this can be at maximum 52% of individual income. 

For expats there is a special rule so that you have to pay less income tax, the rule is know as the 30% rule.

Goods

If you buy goods in the Netherlands you also pay tax.
The tax is called VAT and is 0%, 6% or 19% (october 2012 this will be 21%) of the price you pay.

Gifts & Inheritance

When you receive a gift or a inheritance, the dutch governements will charge you a tax for the amount you receive.

Tax refunds in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands you not only paying  taxes, but you can also get a lot of tax refunds, for example when you have a mortgage or education costs.
Your partner may also get a general tax credit.
