An extra €35 million will be made available for the Participatiewet, said Jetta Klijnsma, Secretary for Social Affairs and Employment.

The money will be go to regional Werkbedrijven – work enterprises that help people to re-integrate them for employment – who will play a major part in executing this law. These enterprises will partner with municipal councils, the UWV (Employee Insurance Agency), regional employers, labour unions and educational institution.

The ministry also revealed the regulations for the regional Werkbedrijven – each one of the 35 work enterprises will receive €1 million. “The success of the Participatiewet will stand or fall depending on the cooperation within the region. That is why I want to offer extra support in the starting phase to make this possible.”

The aim of the law is to get more people with disabilities (physical, mental and even social) into the labour market, preferably in regular jobs. The Association of Dutch Municipalities has requested the Secretary of State for additional funding for the start-up phase. Klijnsma said: “It is important that all parties in the region have all the tools to successfully implement the Participatiewet.”

Through this law and other decentralising regulations, municipalities have been given the opportunity to provide people with more support for their requests with regards to work or other social support.

From 2015, all municipalities will receive one budget, which they use to afford all supporting facilities.
