How to handle a phone interview in 6 steps

You think that a phone interview is the best thing that happened to you since you started looking for a job: You don’t have to look neat or overthink about the firmness of your handshake. Think twice though: a phone interview IS an actual interview. They are becoming increasingly common in the screening process due to the large number of applications recruiters receive. Do not underestimate the impact a successful phone interview can have on your chances to land this job.

  1. Tidy up your space
    It is best not to stay in you pajamas slouching on your couch during the interview. Even though the interviewer cannot see you, a clean, uncluttered space and a comfortable, professional outfit will make you feel confident and alert. 
  2. Practice
    Do your research on the position and company as you would do for any other interview. Write down questions and prepare examples drawn from your experience. A good idea is to rehearse the interview beforehand with a friend. They can tell you how you sound on the phone, how many “err” sounds you make and what is their general attitude they get from you during your discussion. There are things you might not notice yourself, as having a naturally high-pitched voice or sounding too stern, for example.
  3. Have the application in front of you
    It is better if you don’t check the application and CV online as you can easily get distracted. Clicking sounds can be off-putting to the interviewer, because you might appear disinterested to the whole process. Print out your CV and notes before the interview. Old school as a technique, but it will definitely prove handy. Try checking information on the company’s website during the interview only if you are confident in your multitasking abilities. In any case, make sure to be focused throughout.
  4. Determine length of interview
    It is a good strategy to determine the length of the interview before you start. In that way, you can estimate how long you can spend on answering each question. Phone interviews are usually shorter so make sure to keep this in mind.
  5. Smile on the phone, be natural
    Often said to be a customer service myth, smiling while you’re on the phone can have a strongly positive effect on how you sound. When smiling, you sound more relaxed and approachable.
  6. Ask what happens next
    Don’t forget that it is ok to ask about the next stage of the process. You might get invited to another interview or learn about the status of your application on the spot. Do send a brief thank you note and keep your fingers crossed!
