6 Pertinent Questions to ask The Hiring manager during an Interview.

During an interview, it is not uncommon for the hiring manager or the recruiter to ask the bulk of the questions, leaving the job seeker the arduous task of formulating suitable and impressive responses.

However, towards the end of the interview, the tables do turn and the candidate is an opportunity to ask any questions he or she might have. This is an opportunity for the candidate to further differentiate himself and it is advisable that the candidate be well prepared to ask relevant and well thought out questions. Asking the right questions to the interviewer will set the job seeker apart as one who is analytical, assertive and able to think and formulate a coherent train of thought during stressful situations

While It is important that the hiring manager asks the right questions because he would like to ascertain if the candidate is the best fit for the position that needs to be filled. It is equally important that the candidate ask pertinent questions that will provide an indication of whether the company is a good cultural fit for his or her career purposes and can provide an atmosphere conducive to his or her best work.

In addition, it is expected that the candidate must have done some research on the company prior to the interview, this is a great opportunity to showcase that and get clarification on any issues of concern. Via the right questions, the candidate can also obtain more information about the company and the role in question, that will further aid performance further along in the recruitment process.

6 relevant questions to ask the hiring manager are provided below. They are by no means exhaustive but if utilised appropriately will provide a clearer insight on the company culture and provide a glimpse of what to expect in the near future should you be offered the job.

1. How would you describe the company culture at XYZ Company?
2. Is this a new role opening up within the company? If the response is “No” you might want to follow up with “What happened to the previous job owner”?
3. On the organisational chart, who will I be reporting to?
4. What the major challenges the department is currently facing?
5. Will there be any form of training provided prior to the start of the job?
6. What are the next steps in the hiring process and when do I expect to hear from you regarding the outcome of this meeting?

While it is important that the hiring manager see the job seeker as a suitable candidate, it is also important that the job seeker see the company as one suitable to meet his or her career needs and aspirations. Asking the right questions is a great way to achieve this.
While a lot of effort and preparation will go into having the right responses, it is advisable to do the same with regards to having the right questions.
