The Underground the Hague is looking for the writers

THE UNDERGROUND is looking for writers

We are looking for talented and inspired people with a flair for writing who can deliver interesting and informative articles about life and living in The Hague.

A writer for The Underground should ideally be part of the international community of The Hague whether living here or just visiting.

We are looking for articles with a personal touch. Topics including art, music, museums, architecture, food, shopping, books, history, sports and leisure related to The Hague are encouraged. Let the reader experience The Hague through your eyes. We are interested in positive and constructive pieces that are respectful of other cultures and nationalities, including the Dutch!

Rights: We run previously unpublished material. We hold exclusive rights for six months, reserving the right to publish in a different format, for example, on our website.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Please send all submissions to: editor@theunderground.nl with ‘Submission’ and the article title in the subject line of the email.

Attach written content in a MS Word document in Times New Roman font size 12. Do not use text boxes, underline or other clever graphics. Bold and plain text only.

Each submission to be accompanied by a 30 word biography [in the third person] including personal website URL, even if previously published by The Underground. Please add this to the end of your document.

Photographs to be sent as an attachment with your submission as a JPG attachment 300 dpi. Include captions for all images at the end of your article in italic font. Any images should be attached separately and not inserted into the document.

Improperly submitted pieces will not be considered.

WRITERS’ GUIDELINES

Articles: maximum 400 words, unless otherwise specified
British English spelling (spell check and/or OED)
Use one space after each full stop
Single spacing after paragraph
Keep sentences short. Long sentences can look like a paragraph in column inches
The tone should be friendly and accessible. Address the reader as ‘you’ rather than ‘we’
Unless you are writing a column or very personal piece, please, ensure you write about other people and not just yourself
Should be informative and inspiring
Please title your work; we prefer a catchy title and a subtitle paragraph (often called a leader). Title should attract the reader’s interest and the leader should clarify the topic
Include your name in the leader, for example: Scheveningen is not the only beach in The Hague. Jane Smith shares Kijkduin’s many secrets
Please include with the article any information that readers would find relevant such as location, price, website, dates and directions. Put these at the end of the article as a sidebar
Please avoid using slang as much as possible
Dashes, brackets and exclamation marks to be used sparingly
Use subheadings and bullet pointed lists or tips to make your article more interesting, where relevant
