St. Petersburg named best city in the world for job seekers, Utrecht & Rotterdam 5th and 6th in international rankings

St Petersburg has been named the best city in the world for job-seekers, followed by Vienna (2nd place), Moscow (3rd place) and Frankfurt (4th place)
Utrecht ranks fifth in the international rankings as the best Dutch city for jobseekers, beating cities such as Rotterdam (6th place), Eindhoven (11th place) & Amsterdam (17th place).
Most work is available in Moscow, New York, St Petersburg and London, with between 100,000 and 250,000 vacancies per city.
Jobseekers looking for a high salary are best advised to move to San Francisco, where employers offer an average of €5,522 per month.
The most affordable city for job-seekers is Palermo (Italy), where only 15% of the incoming salary is spent on rent, followed by Edmonton (Canada).

International jobseekers are best advised to move to St. Petersburg. The metropolis emerges as the 'best city for jobseekers' in a recent analysis by job search engine Adzuna.
The study compared the 70 largest cities in 16 different countries on the basis of the number of vacancies, the monthly salary offered, unemployment rates, the affordability of the city and the ratio of vacancies to population. A score was assigned to each of these factors in order to determine which global city can be considered the 'best city for jobseekers'.
In the ranking, St. Petersburg comes first as the best place for jobseekers, followed by Vienna (2nd place), Moscow (3rd place), Frankfurt (4th place) and Utrecht (5th place). The city on the coast of the Baltic Sea is not only characterised as a cultural hub in Russia, but is also seen as an important player in the industrial and financial sector. Multinational companies such as Toyota, General Motors, Hyundai and Nissan are located here, making it an attractive city for job-seekers with a background in mechanical engineering.
Elsewhere in the world, only Moscow (259,000 vacancies) and New York (203,000 vacancies) have more jobs available for job-seekers. In the latter city, however, the unemployment rate is relatively high, as a result of which St. Petersburg, with 115,000 vacancies, ultimately scores better in the rankings. The highest unemployment is seen in the South African cities of Pretoria (64th place), Johannesburg (41st place) and Cape Town (57th place), while unemployment in Edinburgh (24th place) is the lowest of all world cities in the rankings.
The most affordable city for international jobseekers is the Italian city of Palermo, where residents spend just 15% of a month's salary on rent. In the Sicilian capital there are especially many opportunities available in the sales and technical sector. Also in the Canadian Edmonton is relatively affordable living, here you pay an average of 17% of a month's salary in rent. In the Brazilian cities of Rio de Janeiro (68%), São Paulo (69%), Fortaleza (72%) and Salvador (74%) on the other hand, residents spend most of a month's salary on rent.
Of the Dutch cities, Utrecht comes out as the best, with a 5th place on the international rankings. The student city scores above average on all factors measured during the survey. The relatively high monthly salary in Utrecht of €3253 makes this city an attractive option for (international) jobseekers. With more than 10,000 vacancies, Utrecht also has one of the best proportions of vacancies in relation to the number of inhabitants in the world.
Utrecht beats cities like Rotterdam (6th place), Eindhoven (11th place) and Amsterdam (17th place). Amsterdam receives the highest salary of the Dutch cities in the ranking, at €3,522 per month. However, Amsterdam scores lowest on the affordability of the city. This is where residents spend the highest percentage of their salary on rent, about 36% of an average monthly salary.

3. Methodology
Adzuna analysed the largest cities in all 16 markets in which it operates, resulting in a list of 70 cities around the world. To arrive at a ranking, each of these 70 cities was scored on the basis of 5 metrics: the absolute number of vacancies, the average monthly salary offered, local unemployment rates, the % of a monthly salary spent on rent, and the job density per city.
For the number of vacancies and the average monthly salary per city, Adzuna's vacancy data between 9 - 18 November 2020 was used. In a number of cases the data came from ca.indeed.com and seek.co.nz. Where possible, local unemployment figures were taken from OECD publications of September 2020. The job density per city was calculated by comparing the number of inhabitants with the number of vacancies in the city in question.
Affordability per city was calculated by comparing the average (gross) monthly salary with the average rent of a flat (2 beds) in each city. These rental data come from different sources, each a well-known player in the rental market of the country concerned.
All scores on the different factors were added together, in order to arrive at an overall Adzuna Score. The city with the highest score is considered to be the 'best city in the world for job seekers'.
