When you have applied for a job or already had an interview, it is important to follow up with the contact person to check the status of your application. Consider the time frame in which you expect to hear from the company and if nothing has been communicated, then take action. Do not wait for the company to contact you at this point, just contact the recruiter instead.

Pursuing the application demonstrates your interest in the position, appreciation for being considered, and enthusiasm to hearing back from the recruiter. Even if you are not hired for that specific job you can always keep in touch with the recruiter for future jobs.

Avoid following up through texting or social media. Regardless of whether the recruiter contacted you through social media. Potential employers appreciate candidates’ professionalism, like those who choose to follow up by sending an email, a handwritten note, or a phone call to the HR department or recruitment agency contact person.

Calling

Although it is quick and easy to call, the person you are talking to might be part of the decision process. Therefore, before you call, be prepared with the name of the person you wish to speak with and the company you are referring to (if calling a job agency). Write down carefully (and practice) what you want to say, specifically: your name, the position and your qualifications.

Your Pitch should sound natural and confident. Make sure that your surroundings are not noisy in the background. Pick a specific time in the day, not too early or late, and then call. State your contact information in case they wish to contact you back. Express enthusiasm, and remain polite and professional from the beginning to the end of the call. Say thank you and that you hope to hear from them soon.

Emailing or Note

Sending an email or handwritten note shows courtesy and professionalism. This follow up is perfect to use as your final pitch. However keep it brief. It also gives you the opportunity to remind the contact person of your pervious conversation if you had one. You can once again state why you are the best candidate for the position before their final selection is made.

If you had an interview or pervious conversation, it is the perfect opportunity to clear any mistakes made. Mention unanswered questions about your qualifications and any other specific topic. Finally express enthusiasm or mention your interest for the position in the company. Include your contact information. Indicate that you wish to keep in touch in the future. Say thank you and that you hope to hear from them soon.

Dealing with Rejection

A recruiter who calls you back with negative news can indicate that you were a good candidate, but wants to let you down professionally and be honest with you. There might possibly be a chance for a future job application through the same person or company. So your response should be professional. For example:

Hi______,

Thank you for letting me know about (the position)
I understand your decision and appreciate the opportunity to have (applied/been interviewed). Please keep me in mind for future opportunities. I respect the work you do at (name of company).

All the best
