Rail union FNV wants public transport, the police and the department of justice to take action in ending violence against public transport staff.

"We must make a joint statement. Get your hands off of our staff!" this was the statement made by union director Roel Berghuis following the beating of a railway conductor at Amsterdam Central Station.

The guard was injured in the scuffle with travellers, which eventually ended with the NS employee, one of the thugs and a bystander on the tracks where a train was about to leave.

The trade unionist calls the recent incident 'rock bottom’ in a series of serious assaults in recent months. Berghuis said; "This does not only happen on OV. We see the aggression against uniformed personnel increase throughout society. We need to come up with a broad solution with all parties involved to act."

Berghuis hopes to see involvement of Minister of Justice Ivo Opstelten and increase the penalties against troublemakers.
