This emerges from a survey conducted by CBS, which shows 3.4 percent of employees having had one or more accidents in 2014. That amounts to about 240 thousand workers. Almost 88 thousand of these accidents followed an absence of at least four days.
Failure by injury
The injuries were, in most cases, physical. In nearly 30 percent of accidents with longer absence, the injury was caused by slipping, tripping, or falling on the workplace. Threats, biting, or kicking was also frequently cited as a cause (22 percent), as well as crushing or being hit by an object (16 percent).
Failure by mental injury
In more than a quarter (26 percent) of the 88 thousand accidents respondents said that mental inguries led to more absenteeism in 2014. For example, this involves psychological harm by threat or a shock from a traumatic experience.16 percent of respondents were involved a combination of physical and psychological injuries.
About a quarter of the accidents (26 percent) occurred at locations such as factories and repair workshops, according to employees. At healthcare facilities and locations in the service sector (eg offices, schools or museums), this came up as 15 percent of the accidents. On construction sites, in homes and in public places, the survey results found fewer accidents at work place.
These results were taken from the Nationale Enquête Arbeidsomstandigheden (National Survey of Working Conditions, NEA), which is conducted by CBS and TNO. Results related to accidents are not comparable with previous years, due to methodological changes.
