Many Dutch people hold education and training alongside their work, a total of 1.6 million people aged 25 to 65 years, according to figures from CBS.

In addition to this, around 40 percent of professionals are currently busy with training.

These are mainly people from around thirty years old who attend courses. That's because they often need to be incorporated for a first job. People with higher education often learn more at a higher speed than people with less education. This varies from workshops, to learning Spanish or art history to a complete course in higher education.

Within the European Union, 11 percent of 25- to 65-year-olds are in training courses in 2014. The European Commission had set a target for 2010 of 12.5 percent. That has not yet been achieved. The European commission intends to follow a new target for 2020, where 20 percent of this age group should be following a course or courses.

Market research undertaken by NIDAP shows that 70 percent of employers contribute towards the training of an employee. Not everyone makes use of it, because 40 percent of the professionals expected to remain employable without further schooling over five years. This expectation is greatest in the construction, transport, trade and the catering sector.
