Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are enterprises that employ fewer than two hundred employees. In the past years the number of people employed is growing, and it continues to grow. As reported by LinkedIn, there is an estimated increase of 19% in 2017 over that in 2016. “The popularity of SMEs as an employer continues to grow,” says LinkedIn from their data. LinkedIn analysed over one million Dutch members’ profiles, out of the total 7 million Dutch members on the platform.
Motorized SMEs
"Overall employment increases, with SMEs being motorized," says LinkedIn. As a result the number of people working for large companies continues to lessen, but that is not as severe as in previous years. The number of people employed by companies with more than ten thousand employees declined by 20% in 2016. On the other hand, the annual decline was only 1.7% in 2017. According to LinkedIn, it is mainly telecommunications (-10%), oil & energy (-4.6%) and manufacturing industry (-2.6 %).
The Rise of Entrepreneurs
LinkedIn also recognizes there is a 6.5% increase in the number of people who defines themselves as an entrepreneur. "Good news", commented Michaël van Straalen, president of SMEs in the Netherlands. "Whether you want to be with the latest technology or in health care, SMEs offer opportunities for everyone."
According to LinkedIn between April 2016 and April 2017 the majority of LinkedIn users started an SME business while working for other companies, especially in the technology sector. As employment increased, so did the number of new jobs by 5%. This includes the health care, engineering, retail and business sectors. Still it is uncertain whether these entrepreneurs actually continued through and became successful.
New Talent
In the past year research also shows the focus on the movement of migrant workers. A total of 19% of professionals, mainly those who work with software companies, moved from India to the Netherlands. Dutch migrants contributed a 9% increase of talented professionals in financial and business services to The United Kingdom. Followed by Italy with 8%, Turkey7 %, and Brazil7 %. Dutch professionals also migrate and exchange talent with other countries such as Germany 28%, Belgium 16%, Australia 6%, Switzerland 5% and Spain 5%.
