Frequently asked questions

Emergency leave (calamiteitenverlof)

Employees can take emergency leave when they unexpectedly need time off from work (e.g. a water main break in the home or an ill child). The time period should be reasonable, depending on why the leave is needed. Employees may need to take just a few hours in some cases, while other situations may require a full day or longer. Employers are expected to continue paying employees’ salaries during the leave period.
